Appropriations Season in Full Swing; ANA Submits Testimony, 35 Senators Sign Title VIII Dear Colleague in Support of $267.3 Million

At the beginning of April, Senators Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) circulated a letter in the U.S. Senate supporting $267.3 million in FY 2011 appropriations for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs. A bipartisan group of 35 members of the Senate signed the final Mikulski/Snowe letter, which was delivered to the Senate Appropriations Committee on April 15.

ANA and National Nurses Week Recognized on Capitol Hill

In honor of National Nurses Week, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), one of three nurses currently serving in Congress, has introduced House Resolution 1261. The resolution states that the House of Representatives recognizes the significant contributions of nurses to the health care system, and supports the goals and ideals of National Nurses Week as founded by the American Nurses Association.

Respecting the Rights of Hospital Patients to Receive Visitors and to Designate Surrogate Decision Makers for Medical Emergencies

On April 15, 2010, President Obama directed the Secretary of Health & Human Services to require hospitals participating in Medicare or Medicaid to respect the wishes of their patients regarding who may visit them or make medical decisions on their behalf.
