ANA Participates in the 2010 Nurse Leaders in Native Care Conference

The 2010 Nurse Leaders in Native Care Conference was held at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC from July 19-23, 2010.  The conference theme was “Transforming Indian Health Care through Nursing Leadership.”  Nurses representing nurse executives, directors of public health nurses, public health nurses, advanced practice nurses and nurses working in Indian Health, Tribal and Urban programs from across the country were in attendance.

A welcome reception hosted by the Arizona Nurses Association provided an opportunity for ANA’s past-president, Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR and chief executive officer Marla, Weston, PhD, RN to provide opening remarks.   Rose Gonzalez, MPS, RN, Director of Government Affairs provided a presentation focused on “Nurses Making a Difference in National Policy.”   Ms. Gonzalez provided an overview of nurses’ role in the health care reform debate and discussed nursing provisions within the law.   A brief overview of the Indian Health Improvement Act which was permanently reauthorized and improves health care for 1.9 million Native Americans was also discussed.

The remainder of the conference focused on nursing practice and leadership issues as well as discussing various ways to improve patient care and public health nursing.  The conference was a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills and information and network with colleagues.
