Nurses Legislative Days

We are only two months into 2010 and nurses are poised for challenging state legislative sessions. Legislators, faced with severe budget deficits, are limiting policy decisions primarily to those that will be revenue generating or reduce costs. State nurses associations are not deterred, advancing agendas that demonstrate the contributions and value of nurses in the health care delivery system.

Since the beginning of the year, ANA staff delivered key note address and legislative briefings at three ANA constituent member association’s legislative days. Marla Weston, PhD, RN, ANA CEO, Rose Gonzalez, MPS, RN, Director for Government Affairs, and Janet Haebler, MSN, RN, Associate Director for ANA State Government Affairs enjoyed face-to-face time with nurses and students in Mississippi, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The state budget woes did not dampen the spirit of attendees as they held rousing policy discussions and met with their elected representatives. Nurse advocacy is alive and well.
